Introduction to Digital Photography (Private/Semi-Private)
If you’re interested in my Introduction to Digital Photography (Private/Semi-Private) lessons, they provide hands-on instruction to help you use your camera in a more effective manner and create better photos. By the end of the course, you should no longer need to take photographs using any automatic settings.
Course Overview
My class covers the basics of digital photography, including camera controls, speed, aperture, ISO and shooting modes, depth of field, correct exposure, photographic composition, and lighting. I’ll also cover practical applications of the photographic techniques that you will then practice outside of class. I’ll provide advice on common accessories such as a flash and a tripod, equipment, and software choices for your individual photography goals, and recommendations on camera purchases or upgrades.
Tom’s photography course was an excellent investment! I knew absolutely nothing about photography before taking his course. Now, I am comfortable handling my camera and able to take nice photos! I love the way he structured the classes and I especially loved the homework assignments! They really helped to reinforce all the topics we covered. Course Format
My Introduction to Digital Photography class is usually held over three meetings of 1.5 hours for a total of 4.5 hours. The first two meetings are held at an agreed-upon public location. The lessons are completed over several weeks, and the final lesson is usually a photo-walk, at dawn, in Fells Point or another outdoor location. The final lesson can be changed to meet the student’s specific needs.
Tom has a wealth of knowledge to share and he does share it so it was easy to understand for this very new camera owner. He was very patient with me. The photo walk was an excellent way to put it all together. He was also very encouraging.

Scheduling is open-ended, giving you time to practice the concepts discussed after each lesson. I’ll give you photo homework assignments to complete, and once you’ve reviewed the basic camera controls, you can direct what additional topics you’d like to cover. The cost of a private lesson (one student) is $195. The cost of a semi-private instruction (offered when 2 students who are friends take lessons and sign up at the same time) is $295 (sharing a camera) and $330 total (2 cameras). I had the pleasure of taking the introduction to photography class provided by Tom Wiggins. I went from not really knowing how to operate ANY of the settings outside of the automatic mode on my DSLR camera to getting a much deeper understanding of all of the available shooting options and parameters to make the pictures I take come out more lively… Tom is very easy to work with and you can see his passion in helping his students understand the material even after the class is done. I am glad our paths have crossed and I do recommend this class for beginners.

Course Description
Designed for those who have completed an introductory digital photography course and are proficient in camera settings adjustments, this class covers more advanced techniques. Lesson topics are designed around the interests and skill level of each student.
The primary focus of this course is on fieldwork, which allows you to put into practice what you learned in previous sessions. Fieldwork is customized to your interests, whether you prefer photographing children, landscapes, flowers, animals, or anything else.
