Thoughts on Teaching Photography

I’ve been teaching digital photography for over 10 years. Here are my thoughts on what I have learned.

I have met many individuals who were overwhelmed by the depth of their digital camera’s menus. They had no idea where to start. In the beginning my lessons were taught in a group setting. It became quickly apparent that group lessons (8-10 students) didn’t work. Why, because all digital cameras are not created equal. I began teaching private and semi-private lessons, so that the students could get more individual attention. My goal is to give each student the best possible opportunity to improve the understanding of your camera.

Digital cameras today hardly resemble the film cameras of the late 20th century, when you only had to deal with the following: film speed, aperture, shutter speed, and focal length of the lens. Digital cameras are becoming more feature-rich and complicated to learn. The digital camera revolution has turned cameras into handheld computers with lenses that take pictures.

My Introduction to Digital Photography is 4 1/2 hours in length and is meant to provide you with an understanding of the basic controls on your camera so you have the tools to improve your digital photography. At the end of 4 1/2 hours, a student will only begin to understand how to take properly exposed, sharp photos without relying on their camera’s fully automatic setting.

Do you remember learning a sport or a new hobby? You started with the fundamentals first and built on that knowledge. Photography is the same! It takes practice, trial and error, and analysis of the photos you take to improve your photography skills. Taking consistently good photos doesn’t happen in a week or two. It takes many months if not several years to perfect. The amount of effort you put into learning your camera’s controls will pay back benefits in the long term.

If you’ve read the About Me page on my website, you will know that I have spent a good portion of my life with a camera in my hands. I Love Photography and want to share my Love of Photography with others. I’ve used many different cameras over the years and each new camera provided a new learning experience.

Here’s the course outline for my Introduction to Digital Photography:
